Johan Ferreira has 35 years of experience in the mining industry. His experience includes strategic executive leadership roles together with a managerial execution track record of global / international assignments.
Over and above his leadership and rigorous operational experience, his areas of expertise include: mine design, project management, the turning around of businesses / operations and commissioning of mining projects.
Johan started his mining career in 1986 with Anglo American as a Learner Official and progressed to the level of Senior Vice President Operations - South Africa Region, which later operated as AngloGold Ashanti. Prior to joining Khoemacau, Johan was the Regional Senior Vice President - Africa Region for Newmont, based in Ghana. During his four year tenure with Newmont, he had many successes. Apart from dealing with complex internal and external stakeholder relationships, infrastructure challenges, and new project development, Ghana was one of Newmont’s top performing operating divisions under Johan’s leadership.
In addition to his career, he also led the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa as President as well as the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and served as Director on various Boards.
Johan holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) degree from the University of Pretoria and is a qualified and registered Professional Engineer. Johan assumed the role as CEO of the Cupric group, which owns and operates Khoemacau, in October 2018.
Boikobo Bashi Paya
Executive Director Stakeholder Engagement, Sustainability and Legal Compliance
Boikobo Bashi Paya (BK) joined Khoemacau Copper Mining from Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), where he was the Director of Research and Development.
Prior to joining BIUST, BK enjoyed a long career with the Ministry of Minerals Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR), where he rose through the ranks to Permanent Secretary.
BK holds a Bachelor of Science (Geology) degree from the University of Botswana and a master’s degree of Philosophy (Geology) from the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom.
Director Corporate Finance and Development
John Munro has 30 years of experience in the mining and private equity industries. He began his career with Gold Fields South Africa in 1991, and in 1999, John joined the newly created Gold Fields Limited as the head of feasibility and acquisitions.
He was appointed to the Executive Committee of that company in 2002, and assumed responsibility for international gold, copper and PGM operations and development projects, covering Ghana, Peru, Australia and Finland, he returned to Business Development and Strategy in 2006.
In 2008 he was appointed CEO of Rand Uranium, a private gold and uranium start up in South Africa, owned by First Reserve Corporation, AMCI and Harmony Gold. Following the sale of that company in 2011, he joined First Reserve Corporation’s buyout team in London. In 2014, John commenced working with Cupric Canyon, covering business development and corporate finance, was CEO of the Cupric Group from early 2017 to late 2018, and currently looks after all corporate finance, corporate development and exploration activities.
He is a non-executive director of Norgold SE and Manuli. John holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Chief Financial Officer – Khoemacau
Jaco Maritz is a chartered accountant and has over 23 years’ experience in the mining industry. He began his career with PwC whereafter he joined Placer Dome, Barrick Gold and Acacia Mining in senior financial positions.
Chief Financial officer – Cupric Africa
DDale Quaker has experience in coal mining, chrome smelting, transportation logistics and construction environments. Prior to joining Khoemacau, he operated as a consultant to the mining industry on mining, logistics and finance.
In his last corporate role, he held the position of Group Manager for Marketing and Logistics for Xstrata Coal – South Africa. Prior to that position, Dale was the Corporate Financial Manager for Xstrata Coal where he gained extensive experience in managing and controlling the management reporting function, tax matters as well as information systems.
Dale is a qualified Chartered Accountant and is registered with the Chartered Institute of Management.
Kevin Moxham has been Khoemacau’s General Manager since December 2019. He leads the Khoemacau site team and is tasked with transitioning the project from construction into operations.
Prior to his appointment as General Manager Kevin was part of the Khoemacau project executive development team. Kevin has over 35 years of mining experience including senior leadership roles across the continent such as: General Manager at Barrick’s North Mara Mine, Tanzania, Executive General Manager at BISHA Mine, Eritrea and General Manager at Newmont Akyem Mine, Ghana.
Kevin is a qualified and registered professional certified engineer and holds a Bachelor of Business Leadership degree.
Vice President Human Resources and Communications
Mmama Mhlanga-Fichani has over 10 years senior management experience and has diverse experience from various industries including financial services, non-governmental organisations and telecommunications.
In her corporate roles Mmama has worked at Air Botswana, where she was the Director of Human Resources, and prior to that worked for Standard Charted Bank as Country Head of Human Resources. Notably, Mmama’s NGO exposure was as Human Resources Manager for the African Comprehensive HIV/Aids Partnerships which was a public/private partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Merck Foundation and the government of Botswana.
Mmama holds a double major - Bachelor of Science in Business Management (Human Resources Management) and Marketing Management from Fairmont State College, Fairmont, West Virginia, USA, as well as a Master’s degree in Business and Workforce Development from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania USA.
Chrisjan van Wyk
Senior Project Manager
Chrisjan van Wyk has specialised in project management since 1997. In addition to extensive experience in project studies, Chrisjan has been involved in projects that have gone into execution and delivered to the clients’ expectations.
He has designed and executed projects for major mining companies like Anglo American (coal and platinum), Kumba (Iron ore), Mopani Copper (acid plant) and UraniumOne as well as junior mining companies. Between 2008 and 2012 he was the Project Manager for Kumba’s owner’s team that developed the 10Mtpa green fields iron ore mine ($1b in 2008 terms) in the Northern Cape, South Africa. As Project Manager he was responsible for the day-to-day management of the full project scope that included two open cast mining pits, processing plant, surface infrastructure, dewatering system, roads and three housing developments. The project was successfully completed under budget and in time with an excellent safety record.
Chrisjan is a qualified engineer and has a B. Eng (Mechanical) degree from the University of Stellenbosch, as well as an M.Eng (Project Management) degree from the University of Pretoria.
Chief of Staff
Warren Rigelsford has 33 years of experience in power, mining and consulting covering both operations and projects. Warren started his career in 1985 with Pacific Power in New South Wales, Australia, as an undergraduate and professional officer.
After a successful start to his career in the power industry he moved into the private sector where he spent 15 years working for a publicly listed Canadian company in contracting and consulting, working across all aspects of the mining value chain, rising to the level of General Manager and Director for their Australian operations.
Warren moved to Glencore in 2008 (formerly Xstrata Coal), where he held the role of Manager Projects (Global) for the coal division. During his 6 years at Glencore, he moved to South Africa to further his project career. In 2014, Warren joined Khoemacau as the Project and Construction Manager and successfully led the pre-feasibility and feasibility studies and the early FEED works.
Warren holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) degree from the University of Technology, Sydney, and a master’s degree of Business Administration (Technology Management) from Deakin University, Melbourne. Warren is a Charted Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the institution of Engineers Australia and a registered Professional Engineer with the ERB (Botswana).
